How to Clean your Back Window if it has Defroster Wires

You may be wondering how to clean your car’s back window if your car has defroster wires. At Y & L Auto Glass, we understand your concern about not hurting your defroster wires, which is why we are sharing a few tips that will help you throughout the cleaning process.

If you are not aware if your car has these defroster wires, take a deep look at your car’s back window. They are pretty easy to identify as they are fine wires that look like pretty thin lines.

Defroster wires, how do these work?

Those fine wires are used to heat the glass. This helps to defrost ice and also defog the back glass.  These defroster wires are incredibly useful in the winter as they clear up whatever frost or fog you have on your back window to allow you better visibility.

Tips to clean your back window if it has defroster wires

What will you need?

2 microfiber towels (one for cleaning and one for drying)

A glass cleaner

Steps:

First, clean the outside glass

Fold your towel and spray your glass cleaner onto your microfiber towel. Apply your towel to your back window and begin wiping off whatever dirt you have on the glass.

It’s a good idea to work in sections. Once you finish one section, take your drying towel and wipe up any leftover solution. Make sure to do this thoroughly in order to have a streak-free finish. If your drying towel isn’t working very well, make sure to flip over to a dry side.

Repeat the procedure over until you’ve completely cleaned the whole back window.

Now, it’s time to clean the inside glass.

This is the step in which we have to be more careful depending on what kind of car you have. With the  5 door car with the hatch that opens up, this will be way much easier. If it’s a seda, it can be a little delicate but we will get it done.

A good trick if you’re cleaning a sedan back window is to remove the headrests in the back seat. This will make it easier to move and maneuver around in that tight space.

Add the glass cleaner to your towel and apply it to the inside of the back window. Here is when you need to be careful around the wires. Normally, the majority of those wires run from one side of the vehicle to the other. There are also wires that go up and down so make sure to be careful. Make sure your cleaning passes in the direction that most of the wires are going. Remember, always make sure you’re gently cleaning in the same direction.

Important: Do not do this in the heat or direct sunlight. If you do this when the glass is hot, the glass cleaning solution will dry faster than you can dry it and will leave watermarks everywhere. Make sure you have a cool surface before you begin.

Continue the process until you’ve cleaned the whole window. Just like that, you have your back car window clean!

Importance of not hurting the defrosting wires when cleaning

These wires are delicate – if one of them gets damaged, that section won’t work and it will be a hassle for you during the rainy season. In order to avoid this situation, we recommend you to follow the tips mentioned before.

As a people-first company, the health and safety of our associates and customers is always top of mind. Like many of you, we have been closely following the news and navigating these uncharted waters since first learning of the COVID-19 outbreak.

We want to assure you that we are doing everything we can to ensure that our customers and our people remain safe and healthy. We are closely following guidelines released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to prevent the spread of the virus.

Here are just a few of the tactics we are taking to protect our customers and associates:

  • We’ve increased the frequency of cleaning and sanitizing our technicians’ vehicles, our shops and our office locations.
  • We are providing access to sanitizing wipes and alcohol gel wherever possible.
  • Technicians are greeting customers from a social distance with a smile instead of a handshake.
  • As always, we encourage our associates to wash their hands frequently, refrain from touching their faces and to stay home if they aren’t feeling well.
  • If associates have recently traveled to a high-risk area of the world or been exposed to someone who has, we are asking them to self-quarantine for 14 days, as recommended by the CDC.
  • We have instituted strict international and domestic travel policies and postponed large in-person meetings.
  • We continue to update our associates across the country on procedures to help stop the spread of germs.
