Facts about Automotive Windshields

Windshields are known to protect the inside of your vehicle; stopping bugs, rocks and any external element that can get into the car, most likely to protect you (the driver) and any passenger from serious injuries during an accident. In this post, we want to share other important facts about windshields.

The first windshield

Gas-powered automobiles were first produced in the 1890s. 14 years later, the first windshield was invented. This was nearly a decade with no protection whatsoever. These windshields were made of two-pieced plate glass. When one layer became too dirty, the driver could peel it down.

Windshields were a luxury: In the early days of automobiles windshields were a luxury, expensive optional and extra feature that can be added to automobiles. So if someone couldn’t afford a windshield; drivers and passengers wore goggles and scarves to protect their faces.

Roof support: If a car is involved in a rollover accident, without a strong windshield, the roof of the vehicle will easily be crushed.  It’s important to check the integrity of your windshield,  this is why at Y&L auto Glass we recommend you repair or replace your windshield at soon as you realize there is a chip.

Windshield wipers were invented by a woman: In 1903 Mary Anderson invented the windshield wipers. She was inspired after observing a trolley vehicle driver struggling to see clearly due to the snow falling on his windows. They weren’t automatic as they are today.

Coronavirus (COVID-19): Keeping our people and our customers safe

As a people-first company, the health and safety of our associates and customers is always top of mind. Like many of you, we have been closely following the news and navigating these uncharted waters since first learning of the COVID-19 outbreak.

We want to assure you that we are doing everything we can to ensure that our customers and our people remain safe and healthy. We are closely following guidelines released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to prevent the spread of the virus.

Here are just a few of the tactics we are taking to protect our customers and associates:

  • We’ve increased the frequency of cleaning and sanitizing our technicians’ vehicles, our shops and our office locations.
  • We are providing access to sanitizing wipes and alcohol gel wherever possible.
  • Technicians are greeting customers from a social distance with a smile instead of a handshake.
  • As always, we encourage our associates to wash their hands frequently, refrain from touching their faces and to stay home if they aren’t feeling well.
  • If associates have recently traveled to a high-risk area of the world or been exposed to someone who has, we are asking them to self-quarantine for 14 days, as recommended by the CDC.
  • We have instituted strict international and domestic travel policies and postponed large in-person meetings.
  • We continue to update our associates across the country on procedures to help stop the spread of germs.
