How to maintain your windshield wipers

According to Wikipedia, a  windshield wiper is a device used to remove rain, snow, ice, washer fluid, water, and/or debris from a vehicle’s front window so the vehicle’s operator can better see what’s ahead of them. Almost all motor vehicles, including cars, trucks, buses, train locomotives, and watercraft with a cabin—and some aircraft—are equipped with one or more such wipers, which are usually a legal requirement.

A wiper generally consists of a metal arm; one end pivots, the other end has a long rubber blade attached to it. The arm is powered by a motor, often an electric motor, although pneumatic power is also used for some vehicles.

This post is intended to help drivers to learn about the proper wiper windshield maintenance. A wiper function is to keep the windshield clean and free from any element.

Here are some tips on how to maintain your windshield wipers

Inspect the blades

A good start is to determine if your windshield wiper blades are in good condition. Inspect your blades for signs of cracking or discoloration. If they look worn out, replace them.

A very basic, wipe them every three months

You need to keep the dirt and grime away from your wipers, these can accumulate under the edge of the wiper or anywhere the blade meets the bracket that holds it to the wiper arm; also leaving smears on the windshield with each wipe. We recommend running a clean cloth along the wiper blade every three months to remove dirt buildup.

When buying wiper blades

Remember the lengths usually differ, don’t forget to measure both old ones. Use the measurements when you look up your vehicle’s make and model to select the right blades.

Final thoughts

It’s known that windshield wipers should be replaced every six months for safety but it’s really important to take a look every now to prevent any issues. Coronavirus (COVID-19): Keeping our people and our customers safe

As a people-first company, the health and safety of our associates and customers is always top of mind. Like many of you, we have been closely following the news and navigating these uncharted waters since first learning of the COVID-19 outbreak.

We want to assure you that we are doing everything we can to ensure that our customers and our people remain safe and healthy. We are closely following guidelines released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to prevent the spread of the virus.

Here are just a few of the tactics we are taking to protect our customers and associates:

  • We’ve increased the frequency of cleaning and sanitizing our technicians’ vehicles, our shops and our office locations.
  • We are providing access to sanitizing wipes and alcohol gel wherever possible.
  • Technicians are greeting customers from a social distance with a smile instead of a handshake.
  • As always, we encourage our associates to wash their hands frequently, refrain from touching their faces and to stay home if they aren’t feeling well.
  • If associates have recently traveled to a high-risk area of the world or been exposed to someone who has, we are asking them to self-quarantine for 14 days, as recommended by the CDC.
  • We have instituted strict international and domestic travel policies and postponed large in-person meetings.
  • We continue to update our associates across the country on procedures to help stop the spread of germs.
