How to Remove Scratches from your Windshield

It’s not a secret that a scratch on your windshield can make it hard to see while you’re driving.  It’s crucial to have a clear visibility on the road to have a safe trip.

Scratches can appear at any time, but we can take some precautions to avoid them. In this article, we will share some tips to remove minor scratches from your windshield.

Here are some things to consider in order to determine if a scratch can be fixed:

  1. The size. Scratches that cannot be covered by half a dollar or cracks more than 3 inches larger cannot be fixed.

  2. Position. If it is located out of your line of vision, it can be repaired. It can’t be repaired if it is located or spread on the edge of your windshield.

  3. Time. We recommend repairing the scratch as soon as you can.

What do you need to get started?

  • Microfiber towel
  • Glass repair kit (you can get it online or at any local store)
  • Cerium Oxide rubbing compound

Steps to remove the scratch:

Start by washing your windshield with soap and water thoroughly to remove any dust or dirt.

Use your microfiber towel to dry your windshield before applying the Cerium Oxide rubbing compound.

Dispense the resin compound directly onto the crack starting from one end.

Look at the scratches from a 45-degree angle, you should see a dark area filled with the compound. If there are still air pockets in the scratch after 5-10 minutes, apply slight pressure from inside of the windshield on the sides and center of the windshield crack.

Touch up any small surface etches around the repair area.

Apply curing strips to the area.

Once you’ve finished applying the curing strips, move your car into direct sunlight to dry. You may also use ultraviolet light to let the compound cure. The compound needs about 5-10 minutes to dry completely.

Remove the resin strips. If the compound is still wet, reapply the strips and let the compound sit for longer. If the resin has completely dried, hold the razor blade at a 90-degree angle and scrape the hardened resin away.

Be careful, you don’t need to apply much pressure during this process. It is normal to see white flakes as you scrape away the excess compound.

Most minor scratches can be removed with the proper tools; deeper scratches have to be repaired by a glass specialist if possible. Remember, with Y & L Auto Glass you get 12-month warranties on all our products to ensure your peace of mind.

Coronavirus (COVID-19): Keeping our people and our customers safe

As a people-first company, the health and safety of our associates and customers is always top of mind. Like many of you, we have been closely following the news and navigating these uncharted waters since first learning of the COVID-19 outbreak.

We want to assure you that we are doing everything we can to ensure that our customers and our people remain safe and healthy. We are closely following guidelines released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to prevent the spread of the virus.

Here are just a few of the tactics we are taking to protect our customers and associates:

  • We’ve increased the frequency of cleaning and sanitizing our technicians’ vehicles, our shops and our office locations.
  • We are providing access to sanitizing wipes and alcohol gel wherever possible.
  • Technicians are greeting customers from a social distance with a smile instead of a handshake.
  • As always, we encourage our associates to wash their hands frequently, refrain from touching their faces and to stay home if they aren’t feeling well.
  • If associates have recently traveled to a high-risk area of the world or been exposed to someone who has, we are asking them to self-quarantine for 14 days, as recommended by the CDC.
  • We have instituted strict international and domestic travel policies and postponed large in-person meetings.
  • We continue to update our associates across the country on procedures to help stop the spread of germs.

We know that many of you need service or have already scheduled an appointment with us. If you need our help or need to make changes, we are happy to provide assistance. You Can schedule your appointment or change your appointment on YLAUTOGLASS.COM
