How to Care for a Newly Replaced Windshield

One of the main concerns when replacing a windshield is how to take care of it. Once your windshield is installed, the auto shop technician should provide you specific care instructions that you must follow to ensure a successful installation. 

A windshield replacement is usually done in 30 to 60 minutes. However, it’s not recommended that you drive your vehicle immediately. In this post, we will share some recommendations to follow after a windshield replacement is done.

Don’t remove the tape. Retention tape helps you fix the positioning of the moldings and keeps the glass in place while it’s curing. We recommend you do not remove it for at least 24 – 48 hours.  

Keep one of your windows open. It is recommended to leave a ¼ inch window gap at all times to prevent any leaks or cracks. Air pressure buildup in a car may threaten the integrity of the glass. 

Do not wash your car. Avoid washing your car for at least 3 days because the moldings may need more time to get fixed into place.

Do not slam doors. With a brand-new windshield, you need to avoid any unnecessary pressure changes. Try closing car doors gently and avoiding bumpy roads and potholes during your commute for the first several days after installation of your new windshield.

Wait to drive your car. We recommend waiting to drive the car for at least one hour following installation. The technicians who install the new windshield should remind you of the time frame after the work has been completed.


Windshield care knowledge is important post-installation. You need to take care of it to minimize any further damage to your pocket.

  • Technicians are greeting customers from a social distance with a smile instead of a handshake.
  • As always, we encourage our associates to wash their hands frequently, refrain from touching their faces and to stay home if they aren’t feeling well.
  • If associates have recently traveled to a high-risk area of the world or been exposed to someone who has, we are asking them to self-quarantine for 14 days, as recommended by the CDC.
  • We have instituted strict international and domestic travel policies and postponed large in-person meetings.
  • We continue to update our associates across the country on procedures to help stop the spread of germs.
